The University of Lyon is an academic site with a global vocation. Labeled IDEX in 2017, it is located in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the Lyon Saint-Etienne basin.
The second largest university center in France, the University of Lyon hosts 150,000 students this year and nearly 20,000 international students and in Lyon and Saint-Étienne campuses. It has a complete range of courses covering the four major fields of study: Arts, Literature and Languages - Economics and Management Law - Humanities and Social Sciences, Technologies and Health. It also has a vast research network through its 172 laboratories.
In 2017, Lyon was voted as the best student city, by a famous magazine specializing in student life. The city of Saint-Étienne stands out for its dynamism and modernity since it was the first French city to be part of the network of creative cities of UNESCO. Founded by the Romans in 43 BC, Lyon was one of the most important cities of the Roman empire, and capital of Gaul, an area comprising most of modern France and Belgium. Lyon is one of France's oldest cities, and is repted as the gourmet capital of France. It's large historic centre, Le Vieux Lyon, is classed as UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998, and is the largest ensemble of Renaissance buildings in Europe.
