Round Table: 'Big Five’ event on: A European Perspective on a Turbulent World Theme: A EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE ON A TURBULENT WORLD Over the past few years, nations and regions in our world have faced an unprecedented economic and geo-political turbulence. Tariff conflicts, trade wars, geo-political tensions, monetary uncertainty and rising socio-economic inequalities have affected our belief in a prosperous and peaceful economy of countries and regions. Until recently, Europe could enjoy a reasonably comfortable economic development. But this comfort zone is increasingly challenged by a wide variety of turbulent movements and unexpected events. Such anomalies raise questions on a proper European response at all geographical levels. 1) Is Europe able to stand more prominently on its own feet, e.g. by building up an independent and vital business sector? 2) Are countries and regions in Europe able to become innovative and powerful spearheads in coping effectively with global disruptions? 3) Is a globally competitive regeneration of European Industry (including national and regional developments) compatible with cohesion and inclusiveness goals for Europe?
