Social Events
Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception - Tuesday August 28
The Opening Ceremony will be held in Devere Hall in Aras na MacLeinn on the campus of University College Cork. This will be followed by a Welcome Reception in the nearby award-winning Glucksman Gallery.
Social Event - Wednesday August 29
In the tradition of the ERSA congresses we organize a social event on Wednesday. This year the social event will highlight the best of Irish and Cork culture, sport, and craic.
The event will be held in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, the new state of the art stadium for Irish traditional sports, hurling and gaelic football. These are sports played by amateur players, only in Ireland, though their popularity is reflected in the stadium capacity of 45,000 people.
Delegates will be brought by coach from the University campus to the stadium, which takes approximately 15 minutes. At the stadium there will finger food, Irish stout, and an exhibition hurling match. Delegates will also enjoy traditional Irish music.
Weather permitting, there will also be a chance for delegates to try their hand with the hurl and sliotar (hurling ball), in a poc fada competition. Whoever can strike the sliotar farthest will be the winner on the night, but everyone who takes part can say they hurled in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Delegates will be brought back to the city centre/camous by coach afterwards. It promises to be an unforgettable night, "the craic will be ninety".
Congress Dinner - Friday September 1
The Congress Dinner will take place in the heart of Cork city, at the famous City Hall. The new City Hall building was opened in late 1936, on the site of the original offices of the city authorities which had been destroyed by fire during the Irish war of independence. City Hall is the seat of city governance. The dinner will follow a drinks reception in the Millenium Hall in the same complex. The fun will continue into the small hours.
