In this talk, I provide an overview of the Python Spatial Analysis Library (PySAL). PySAL's birth ten years ago in academia is my lens to illuminate a collection of themes related to the rise of the open source and open science movements and their intersection with regional science. I hope to elucidate the undervalued, but critical, role of community in the evolution of PySAL, and the lessons for the larger world of regional science that might we might draw. I conclude the talk with the roadmap for the future of PySAL and some thoughts on possible parallel developments in academic regional science.
