Abstract

The growing tourism activity and the enhancement of the entire cultural heritage of the area can represent opportunities to boost regional development if it manages to profile and implement a sustainable tourism model consistent with the interests of all agents. In the current conjuncture, the agro-industrial sector should build bridges towards the fields of culture and services under a proposal that adequately articulates the aspirations of the different sectors involved. The binomial olive-oil landscape and tourism demand deeper analysis, considering economic, environmental and socio-cultural aspects, which are incorporated into specific land-use planning proposals that also integrate other productive activities. But this will only be possible if, on the part of all, economic, social and environmental commitments are assumed, that is, if a coherent scheme of sustainable development is designed. Therefore, it is convenient to continue exploring the potential of the Landscape of the olive grove and critically evaluate the various initiatives (economic, cultural, tourist, etc.) developed during all these years.

Abstract

The EU is committed to a 40% reduction in their domestic greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In order to reach this ambitious target, new measures affecting all economic sectors would be needed. This paper focuses on the tourism sector. Using econometric panel data techniques, the relationships between tourist overnight stays and the hospitality sector electricity consumption is studied for the Spanish Mediterranean provinces during the period, 1999-2014. With this aim an extended Energy-tourism Kuznets Curve hypothesis is tested. Climate variables and the sector capitalization effects are analyzed. The results show that the Energy-tourism Kuznets Curve hypothesis is not supported. An increasing positive relationship between the hospitality sector electricity consumption and overnight stays is observed. In addition, the results show a positive relationships between overnight stays in hotels with higher stars and electricity use. Finally, results also show a notable influence of climatic variables over the electricity use.
