Abstract

The ability to attract and retain human capital is one of the fundamentals of regional development. Despite of having an important flow of income during the last thirty years, rural regions in Colombia remain lagged in their regional and socioeconomic development. Using a unique survey on subjective expectations after graduation from 747 Colombian university students, I examine the determinants of inter-regional migration intentions of future university graduates from Bogotá to La Guajira, Arauca and Chocó. I collect probabilistic expectations about migration, availability of amenities in origin and arrival destination of migration, and expected income. The results shows that the expected income, the perception of security and the probability to have access to other amenities like schools, roads and hospitals together with a higher level of trust in others increases the probability of migration to less developed areas in Colombia, while impatience and being a top GPA student from a privileged economic background decreases this probability.
