Abstract

This paper aims to show differences and similarities in the way and intensity people appreciate natural areas and landscapes between the trilateral Wadden countries (the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark) and South-Korea. This paper specifically focusses on the coastal tidal flat areas in these countries; the ‘Wadden area’ in the Trilateral countries and the ‘Getbol’ in South-Korea. Finding out how people appreciate nature areas is important; nature areas play an important role in people’s well-being, as their ecological and landscape qualities influence for example their choices for tourism, recreation and holiday destinations. However, despite this human interest in nature, it is a challenge to organize support for nature protection. While nature is a public good, which people can use freely, the responsibility for these areas and how these areas are financed are for example constantly under discussion. To identify who appreciates which (type of) nature areas and why, this paper will make use of the Greenmapper, which is an online GIS based tool to measure the social landscape values on a national scale. Providing insights into what kind of nature areas people appreciate and how they use these areas, can help policy makers to understand the connections humans have with nature better.

Abstract

In exploring the idea on Tourism for Resilient Regions attention on one essential characteristic of tourism is needed: the host-guest relationship. In the current paradigm on the concept of “hospitableness” the authors see a host indulging his guest/tourist. The authors argue that this relationship needs to be redefined: unconditioned hospitableness is none existing; is should be seen as social constract between host and guest. The concept of guest need also be expanded to future guests, local community and the fragile environment and social elements. In this conceptual paper we first oppose Luhmann’s functional differentiated systems in society with Taylors view on communitarianism, ecology and modernity. How can we learn from this analysis when looking at Regional area’s via the concept of resilience. This paper takes the Wadden region to see how the concept of sustainable development and resilience will change with the new host-guest/tourist paradigm of Van Rheede and Dekker (2016). Presenting a region where hosts are welcoming visitors/guests and at the same time a mutual responsibility is established to enable a sustainable development/ and contribute to a Resilient Region.
